British MPs arrive on UAE visit

A five-member delegation of British Members of Parliament arrived in Abu Dhabi yesterday at the beginning of a week-long visit to the Emirates. The MPs, including four members of the governing Labour Party, and one from the opposition Conservative party, are members of the UK-UAE All-Party Parliamentary Group, recently established to promote political, economic and cultural ties between the two countries. In a statement issued to announce the visit, the Group's Chairman, Kevan Jones, MP, said that he was delighted to be leading the first-ever trip by members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group to the Emirates.

"Britain and the United Arab Emirates have a strong relationship that goes back for nearly 200 years,” he said. "Since the UAE was established, our two countries have been major trading partners, and have enjoyed an excellent political relationship, while many thousands of British citizens live and work in the UAE.” "Many British companies and educational institutions also have very close ties with the Emirates, and the links are very much a two-way process,” he added. "Our Group has been established to strengthen the ties that already exist, and my colleagues and I are looking forward to meeting with UAE Government officials, as well as with Emirati and British businessmen, to learn more about the relationship, and to identify ways in which it can be developed,” Jones said.

The MPs will be visiting both Abu Dhabi and Dubai during their stay, as well as the offshore oil and gas terminals on Das Island. The UK-UAE All-Party Parliamentary Group was formally created in December last year. It has members from both the House of Commons and the House of Lords, including Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat parliamentarians. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
