A delegation of four British Members of Parliament from the All-Party UK-UAE Parliamentary Group, APPG, arrived yesterday to begin a five-day tour of the UAE. The team, led by Hugo Swire, MP, the Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, is in the UAE as part of a programme designed to familiarise leading British politicians with the UAE's economic development and political viewpoint.

During its visit, the delegation, which includes MPs from both the governing Labour Party and the opposition Conservatives, will visit Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Fujairah, and is expected to meet with a number of leading Government officials, as well as with members of the Abu Dhabi business community.

"We are delighted to be paying this visit to the UAE," Swire told the Emirates News Agency, WAM, on arrival. "The relationship between Britain and the UAE has deep historical roots, going back nearly 200 years, while our two Governments have similar views on a wide range of major international political issues, including issues of direct relevance to the Gulf region.

There are now well over 120,000 British citizens living and working in the Emirates, well over one million Britons visit the UAE on holiday every year and the UAE is one of Britain's key trading partners. There is also close collaboration between our two countries in a number of other fields, including defence, education and culture." "We look forward to our talks with UAE officials to identify ways in which this relationship can be further developed in the years ahead," he added.

Swire, who is on his fourth visit to the Emirates, is Vice-Chairman of the APPG, which was established in 2003 to promote a better understanding of the UAE in Britain's Government and Parliament. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
