British Minister pledges partnership

Britain has an "enduring partnership" with the United Arab Emirates that it is committed to maintain and develop, according to the British Minister for Trade and Investment, Lord Digby Jones.

Writing in the latest issue of Capital Letter, the quarterly magazine of the British Business Group Abu Dhabi, Lord Jones said that "this enduring partnership has left us with a deep well of shared experience, respect and friendship. I will do all that I can to develop that partnership." The relationship is reflected, in part, he said, by the large number of major British companies that are represented in Abu Dhabi and the rest of the Emirates, all of whom, he notes," have committed to a partnership for the longer term."

Formerly the Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry, CBI, the British Minister noted that the UAE is now one of Britain's top ten trading partners world-wide, and one of sixteen countries identified as "high growth markets." Besides British participation of the UAE's oil and gas and power industries, and now, increasingly, in other sectors, thanks to the construction boom and other aspects of the UAE's diversifying economy, Jones stressed that Britain "thrives at the knowledge-driven and innovative end of trade and investment."

"One area where we excel is research and development. Abu Dhabi, too, is concentrating efforts in research and development and the evolution of Masdar is particularly notable. I will be following developments closely to see if the UK can add anything to this exciting venture." "I am determined that the Britain will continue to be an active partner in the UAE," the Minister concluded. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
