The UAE and the U S have enjoyed long-standing and vibrant relations, said William Burns, US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. In an interview with +Al Ittihad+ Arabic daily, Burns said bilateral relations between the two countries have witnessed steady growth in various spheres as clearly evinced but the recent signing of trade and investments agreements.

"The conclusion of framework agreements on trade and investments is yet another evidence that UAE-US relations are based on friendship and cooperation,” Burns told the paper. He also praised the UAE involvement on humanitarian missions worldwide, particularly in Palestine, Afghanistan and Iraq.

On the situation in Iraq, Burns said his country was determined to restore sovereignty to Iraq on June 30th. The current deterioration of security and political situation in Iraq is just one of the challenges that require concerted efforts by all, he said. Burns said there was no link between the mounting US pressure on Syria and US vision for the region, saying that Syria did not respond to the repeated US calls to review its position on a number of issues.

The Syrian position irked the US Congress and prompted it to pass the Syria law. He clarified that the US was not imposing reforms on the region but rather encouraging countries to adopt reforms in accordance with their own particularities. On the Middle East peace, he said the US would remain engaged in the Middle East peace process until a comprehensive and permanent settlement is reached on the basis of two states as envisioned by President George Bush.
