Former U.S President Jimmy Carter today hailed efforts exerted by the President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in aiding disaster and conflicts-ridden countries around the world. Carter, who is in the UAE to receive Zayed International Award for Environment, told a press conference in Abu Dhabi today that President Sheikh Zayed was one of the leading personalities who helped the Carter Centre alleviate the suffering of many people in conflict areas around the world. "The support we have received has enabled us to reduce cases of malnutrition by 90 per cent” Carter said.

He added that his Centre had outlined 65 aid programmes, 35 of which are in Africa, particularly in the area of health and child immunisation against river-blindness, Guinea Worm and other diseases. Three quarters of these diseases are in Southern Sudan where immunisation is made difficult because of the on-going war there, he said. Carter said his centre was now focussing on the efforts to bring about peace to that country, a mission he said, Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan had expressed willingness of the Zayed Centre to participate in.
