'Cash deposit for visa rule only for distant relatives'

A decision to collect a refundable Dh2,000 security deposit from expatriates sponsoring visa for their relatives will only apply to people seeking visa for 'distant relatives and friends', the immigration chief in Dubai clarified yesterday. And one senior official said the rule would in effect increase the numbers of visitors because it would expand the scope of individual sponsorship to include people not directly related to the sponsor. Brushing aside rumours that the decision was meant to reduce the number of visitors, Colonel Saeed Mattar bin Bleilah, Director General of Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department, told Khaleej Times that the decision was 'intended for the contrary, absolutely'.

He said that by re-introducing the rule in Dubai, people who in the past could not bring distant relatives and friends would now be able to do so. He affirmed that expatriates bringing their parents, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters and in-laws would not be required to provide the security deposit, which is to be paid in cash.

No bank guarantee will be accepted. The money will be refunded once the visitor leaves the country. Col Bleilah said it was not a new rule, because it had been there in the past and applied on certain categories. (The Khaleej Times)

He said the rule, which was restricted to Dubai, would soon provide a successful medium enabling most people to sponsor distant relatives and friends to visit the UAE. (The Khaleej Times)
