Chadian President hails Dubai Cares Initiative posted on 08/11/2007
Ndjamena, Chad - Idriss Deby, President of Chad, hailed the humanitarian and philanthropic efforts of the UAE's leadership, including Dubai Cares charity initiative. Addressing a press conference after receiving the Dubai Cares delegation, President Deby conveyed his gratitude to the UAE leaders, especially The UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashed Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and, Ruler of Dubai, for their noble gesture.
The UAE Ambassador to Sudan and Chad Issa Abdullah Al-Nuaimy was present at the press conference. The Dubai Cares delegation is in the country on a two-day visit to deliver humanitarian aid and join forces with Chad-based international aid agencies to bring about the reunification of the children with their families, prior to the implementation of community-based education programmes.
Later, the delegation members travelled to Sudan, where they were received by the Sudanese State Minister of Social Affairs and a Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative.
President Deby pointed out the UAE's efforts are a continuation of the strong bilateral relations that began at the time of late president Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. He said: "We are proud of the strong mutual bilateral ties between the UAE and Chad. We believe the ties will strengthen further in the future.” The Dubai Cares delegation delivered 15 tonnes of food, medicine, clothing, and toys to the children that are currently under the care of a local orphanage, and in coordination with the governments of Chad and Sudan.
Al-Nuaimy stressed the UAE's determination to protect the rights of these children and help them overcome the consequences of the crisis. Al-Nuaimy briefed the Chadian President on the Dubai Cares campaign launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed, to cater to the educational needs of more than one million underprivileged children in poor countries. The charity drive will meet the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which covers many African countries.
The Dubai Cares delegation then travelled to Sudan, where they will start another round of meetings with government officials to discuss the issue of the 103 children who are sheltered in an orphanage in Abeche.
In Sudan, the delegation initiated discussions to find an appropriate mechanism to find a viable solution for the kids and ensure their safe return to their families. The delegation also promised appropriate aid for the kids.
While in Abeche, Chad, facilitated by the local governor, the delegation which included a team of doctors, a pharmacist and a nurse, conducted medical check-ups to monitor the children's health and recommended appropriate treatment.
The delegation also met with the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Health and Social Affairs, in addition to the Secretary General of Foreign Relations. In addition, they met with officials of UNICEF, World Food Programme, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, International Committee of the Red Cross, World Health Organization, and the Office of the Coordinator of Humanitarian Affairs.
Dubai Cares is the latest in a series of international initiatives that reflect Dubai's willingness to play an effective role in securing a better tomorrow for the future generation. The campaign is Dubai's contribution to a global drive to help countries achieve their U.N. Millennium Development Goals of providing primary education to every child by 2015.Dubai Cares is founded on the belief that education is the best long-term solution to poverty and an effective engine for national growth and development.
