Chile (Santiago) - Chilean President Dr Michelle Bachelet, received here yesterday UAE Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is currently visiting the country.

The meeting was attended by Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimi, UAE State Minister, His Excellency Khalid Al Ghaith, Assistant Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs and His Excellency Yusuf Ali, UAE Ambassador to Brasil and Non Resident Ambassador to Cuba and Chile.

The Chilean President welcomed Sheikh Abdullah and the delegation accompanying him, hoping that the visit would further boost the relations between the UAE and Chile. Sheikh Abdullah conveyed the regards of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the Chilean President. Meanwhile, President Bachelet conveyed her regards to Sheikh Khalifa through the UAE Foreign minister, stressing that her country was keen to upgrade ties with the UAE.

On his part, Sheikh Abdullah said his visit to Chile would enhance the bilateral relations, particularly between the business sectors in both countries. He cited the appropriate investment atmosphere in the UAE, which was initiated by the government, adding that the UAE economy is advanced, diversified and provide excellent variety of opportunities for investors in sectors of trade, banking, financial services, information technology, properties, construction, marine and logistics services. Sheikh Abdullah reiterated that the UAE was keen to boost cooperation with Chile.

The UAE Foreign minister underlined the need for signing the Avoiding of Double Taxation and Encourage and Protection of Investment Agreements. Sheikh Abdullah thanked Chile for backing the UAE to host headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) in Abu Dhabi.

The Chilean President stressed that her government sought to strengthen the bilateral ties with the UAE, adding that her country was planning to woo direct foreign investments in the areas of gas, water, electricity and mining. She noted that the UAE delegation visit would pave way for new phase of cooperation between the business sectors in both countries.

The meeting also tackled besides, the bilateral relations, the future cooperation, particularly, in the areas of agriculture, energy, renewable energy, tourism, mining and infrastructure projects.

Sheikh Abdullah also discussed with Chilean Presidential Affairs Minister and Deputy Foreign Minister Joss Antonio, cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the economic, trade and investment fields, as well as the latest developments in the regional and international fields.

Antonio emphasised that his country was seeking to expand scope of its trade and investment partnerships in promising markets worldwide, particularly the UAE, indicating that the Chilean trade committee will hold in cooperation with the Dubai Department of Economic Development from Oct. 19-20, a symposium in Dubai to discuss investment opportunities in line with the Chilean Week sessions, which will be launched next week. The event will highlight the Chilean economy and culture. The event will also include opening of the Chilean Embassy in the UAE, which will be the first Chilean diplomatic mission in the GCC.

The UAE Foreign minister met Chilean Congress Speaker, who lauded the achievements attained by the UAE to become the investment hub. The two sides pledged to exchange parliamentarian visits. Sheikh Abdullah stressed the importance of exchanging the visits between the two countries.

The UAE delegation chaired by HE Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development held meeting with the Chilean Arab Business Council in presence of representative from the Abu Investment Authority and International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC), Mubadala, Masdar, TAQA, Dubai World Ports and others. They discussed investment opportunities and merits in both countries.

The volume of mutual trade between the UAE and Chile stood at over Dh3.9 million in 2008. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
