Chinese Counsellor and Deputy Premier, Tang Jia Shiwan, yesterday praised the outcome of last week's visit to China by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He expressed the hope that the visit would yield better results in the future in boosting relations of economic, political and cultural cooperation between the two countries.

In a statement to WAM, the Chinese Deputy Premier said that trade exchange between the UAE and China by the end of 2003 stood at about US$5.8 billion, making the UAE the biggest importer of Chinese products in the Arab world. He pointed out that by the end of 2003 China's investment in the UAE accumulated to US$50.1 billion, while the total number of UAE investment projects in China stood at 351 projects at a total cost of US$370 million.

On the diplomatic side, the Chinese deputy premier said that diplomatic ties between the UAE and China had made a giant stride. He attributed that to the wise policies and efforts of the leaders and governments of the two countries. He cited the strong and continuous contacts between the two countries at various levels, including the highest level, as the major factor behind such a great success of improved diplomatic ties between the two countries.

He explained that trade exchange between the UAE and China has witnessed rapid improvement since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. From the US$70 million, he said, the ceiling rose sharply to reach US$5.8 billion in 2003, to reflect a sharp increase of about 83 folds in the past 20 years. He said relations between the two countries were built on a solid base and had a high prospect for further development to cover all avenues of cooperation not only between China and the UAE but to serve also the growing ties between China and the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

He said Sheikh Hamdan's visit to China was an important event in the history of China-UAE relations, particularly, in view of the fact that the visit came on the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the UAE. "This reflects the great importance the UAE leadership and government attach to the strengthening of China-UAE ties,” he said. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
