The capital and its surroundings have been decorated with five million colourful light bulbs and 300,000 UAE flags to mark the 31st National Day celebrations. The decoration has been done by Abu Dhabi Municipality. "We have decorated the streets and roads with five million colourful light-bulbs and 300,000 UAE flags, in addition to victory arches on the main roads and highways," said a spokesman of the municipality. The arches, according to the official, also carry the portraits of Supreme Council members and Rulers of the Emirates, decorated with beautiful motifs and flowers.

The arches are sponsored by private companies operating in the emirate. The main arches have been installed at Corniche Street and Airport, Abu Dhabi-Mussafah and Eastern Ring Roads that lead the traffic to the centre of the capital. The giant portrayal of President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, depicting him on an Arabian horse, has also been renovated. The picture, which is in front of Baynounah Tower on the Corniche, has been hand-painted by Abu Dhabi's renowned artist Liaqat Ali Khan.

It was installed during the last National Day celebrations by the Abu Dhabi Municipality, for whom Khan has been working for decades. New floral decorations have been added to the painting which measures 840 square feet. It has taken two months for Khan to complete the painting on 285 pieces of one square metre plywood.

Another huge portrait of the President is at the entrance of Breakwater on the Corniche. It measures 5,550 square feet in area and has replaced the earlier 2,200 square feet portrait done before the 36th anniversary celebrations of Sheikh Zayed's accession as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The decorations for the celebrations also include colourful roadside plants and those in parks and other public places in the emirate. (The Gulf News)
