Environment and Water Minister Dr Rashid Ahmed bin Fahd, said the continuous decline and increasing pressure on water remain a source of concern at various levels due to its close association with various aspects of life and development.
Addressing the inauguration of the 13th Water and Energy Technology '&' Environment Exhibition 2011 (Wetex), he added that the pressure on meagre water resources in the UAE over the last year had created imbalance in supply and demand for water despite all the measures and actions taken by the State in the field of water conservation and reduction of draining.
He noted that many countries worldwide face genuine challenges regarding the water resources because of increasing pressures on water, citing the population increment, agricultural and economic expansion, and unsustainable consumption norms.
The UAE minister underlined that the climate change has added fire on to the fuel. He added that the UAE adopted water desalination option under the directives by the UAE leadership to meet the increasing demands for water.
Fahd referred to the statement of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, that water is worth than oil in the UAE. He highlighted the importance of Wetex to tackle water global challenges. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
