Colombia Colombian President, Alvaro Uribe, received here yesterday at the Presidential Palace UAE Foreign Minister, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, who presented to him a letter from President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Sheikh Abdullah also conveyed to the Colombian President greetings from the UAE President and the latter's wishes of more progress and prosperity for Colombia and its people. The Colombian President also conveyed through Sheikh Abdullah reciprocatory greetings to the UAE President. He underscored his country's commitment to boost bilateral ties with the UAE, which, he said, his country regards as a very important country.

The two sides held a meeting with the UAE side represented by Sheikh Abdullah, flanked by minister of State, Reem Al-Hashimi, Assistant Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs, Khalid Al-Ghaith and other members of the delegation which include UAE private and public sectors' representatives, while the Colombian side was led by Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism, Louis Gulmero and Colombian Deputy Foreign Minister.

They discussed ways to establish trade and economic relations and business contact between companies from both sides in view of the deep belief of the two countries that the private sector plays a vital role in boosting bilateral relations between the two countries through the establishment of joint ventures and other economic activities.

The UAE minister said such a meeting underscores the commitment of the two countries, their private sectors and businessmen to find appropriate positive mechanisms within the legal framework of the two countries. He called for the signing of cooperation agreement between the two sides to boost trade, particularly double-taxation free and investment protection agreements, which, he said, would play an important role in boosting business between the two sides.

Sheikh Abdullah pointed out that the visit will contribute immensely in opening new avenues of bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the future and in establishing a new framework of cooperation in the areas of agriculture, energy, renewable energy and sharing of experience, which are very important wheels that will help move forward trade, economic and investment relations between the two friendly countries.

The UAE Foreign Minister also met with his Colombian counterpart, Jaime Bermudez and discussed with him relations of cooperation and ways to boost them in various areas for the mutual interest of their countries and peoples. They also share views on a number of issues of mutual interest.

He expressed profound gratitude to the Colombian government for its support for Abu Dhabi, which enabled the UAE capital to win the bid to host the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). He invited his Colombian counterpart to attend the IRENA conference, scheduled for Abu Dhabi next January.

He urged the Colombian side to seize the UAE's strategic and competitive advantages as a trade, geographic and tourism hub in the region to boost its economic, trade and investment ties and business interactions among businessmen and firms of the two countries.

For his part, the Colombian Foreign Minister said his country was determined to open its embassy in Abu Dhabi and to boost air transport activities with the UAE, adding that his government was studying a proposal to cancel visa requirement and make entry of the citizens of the two countries visa-free.

He said his country was also planning to hold a cultural festival in the UAE shortly, adding that he will be visiting the UAE with an economic delegation in November to discuss mechanisms for trade and investment cooperation between the two countries. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
