Consular services for Afghans begin

The Afghan Embassy in Abu Dhabi began consular and visa services from 12 March. The new Charge d'Affaires is Rashid Uddin Mohammedi.

Over 70,000 Afghans live in the UAE. The embassy closed in September 2000, when the UAE severed its ties with the Taliban, for the regime's involvement in international terrorism.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries began in August 1974, and resumed when Hamid Karzai visited the UAE on official business on February 11, 2001.

The embassy in the UAE will provide services for residents in other GCC countries until embassies open throughout the region.
