DNRD begins refunding deposits for parent visas

The Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD) yesterday started releasing the Dh5,000 deposit for visas given on humanitarian grounds. Col. Saeed Matar bin Bleilah, Director General of the Department (DNRD), said in April last year that the department was permitting expatriate workers to sponsor their parents on a residence visa. He said that parents could be sponsored on renewable residence visas for one year provided that a sponsor pays Dh5, 000 for each parent as a deposit.

He also noted that the deposit is paid once and will be refunded when a parent leaves the country for good or dies. This also applies for those who want to sponsor their independent or adult sons for humanitarian reasons. There was confusion about the refund of the deposit - whether it was a deposit or a fee. Many residents have complained that they were not able to get back their Dh 5,000. Yesterday the DNRD started to issue cheques for the Dh5,000 deposit for those who applied for visas after they submitted proof that their dependants had left and their visas had been cancelled.
