DNRD refutes reports that senior residents will have UAE passport

Dubai Naturalization and Residency Department (DNRD) has refuted newspaper reports published yesterday, Monday, claiming that all expatriates residing in Dubai for 20 years or more will be eligible for UAE passport, while adding that the Department has no jurisdiction in matters relating to the issuance of passports.

Commenting on the report, Brigadier Saeed bin Belailah, Director, DNRD, said, "The impression conveyed by newspaper reports that all expatriates residing in Dubai for more than 20 years will be eligible for UAE passport is wrong. Moreover, such matters are beyond the purview of DNRD." In another significant development, a special committee of the Department is currently studying a proposal to increase the time span to 10 years from the present 3 years, required for foreign women married to UAE Nationals to claim nationality.

The move is aimed to curb the practice of foreign women signing marriage contracts with National men and having it registered with the concerned authorities with the sole objective of receiving UAE nationality. The Ministry of Interior is currently reviewing the proposal. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
