First deliveries of the 30 Dassault Mirage 2000-9 fighters to the UAE are imminent. Training has been under way since late 1999, and operational units should start forming in 2002-03, First troop carriers set to roll out next year.

The first units from the UAE-Jordan venture to manufacture troop carriers in Jordan should roll out by the first half of 2002, a senior official confirmed. UAE's Bin Jaber Group is working with the King Abdullah Design and Development Bureau on this programme," said Major General Suleiman Al Manaseer of the Jordanian armed forces. The "Tiger" carriers have been designed by the bureau.

UAE had confirmed participation in the programme at IDEX 2001 held in Abu Dhabi earlier this year. Details of the financials of the project were not available. It is also not known what the rollout programme will be, or whether both Jordan and UAE armed forces will induct the carriers. Meanwhile, the Special Operations Forces Exhibition and Conference 2002, which will highlight developments and equipment in counter-terrorism operations, will open in October 2002 in Jordan.

The four-day event is being organised by Abu Dhabi headquartered General Exhibitions Corp. (GEC) and Jordan Armed Forces. Over 50 per cent of space available for Sofex 2002 has been booked. The GE official also confirmed that 87 per cent of the 14,000 square metre internal exhibition space at IDEX 2003 and 70 per cent of the 26,000 square meter external space have so far been taken up.
