The UAE may acquire 22 German-made Fuchs armoured transport vehicles to detect NBC (nuclear, biological and chemical) threats. Deliveries start in early 2007, the makers of the system said yesterday. On Monday, the UAE officially announced it was acquiring the NBC defence system from Germany's Rheinmetall Land-systems for Dh768 million without stating the number or delivery schedule.

"The company will supply 22 of the special version of NBC Fuchs for the UAE with 10 going for the Army and the rest for the National Guard," Neidhardt Juergin, vice-president of Rheinmetall Land-systems, told Gulf News.

The IDEX spokesman declined to confirm the number. "The first vehicle will be delivered in the first half of 2007 and delivery of the rest will be completed by 2010," he said. In the Gulf, Saudi Arabia has 36 Fuchs vehicles that are used by the Corps of Engineers while Kuwait also has some. "Kuwait is interested in more Fuchs vehicles and may acquire the same type as contracted by the UAE."

Oman is also acquiring the vehicles. "They haven't specified the exact number but it could go up to 50," he said. The over 100-year-old German company has so far produced 1,450 Fuchs vehicles and customers include the German Army, the United States, the United Kingdom, Norway, the Netherlands and some Gulf countries.
