The UAE Red Crescent has carried out humanitarian programmes during the first six months of the current year, at both local and international levels, at an estimated cost of Dh155 million. These programmes included sending relief supplies to different countries and developing local humanitarian projects and programmes aimed at orphans both inside and outside the country, according to a report released recently by the RC.

As a result of the Red Crescent's widespread local and external activities, the total cost of the humanitarian programmes and projects over the past year came to Dh321 million including Dh8.6 million as local aid and Dh234.4 million as the cost of external projects and programmes. It said external projects included construction of mosques, digging of wells, in addition to other health, educational and social services and seasonal projects, which cost Dh137 million.

As for relief activities, the cash and in-kind aid provided in 2002 for people affected by disasters and disputes in various countries, including Palestine, Iraq, South Africa, Sudan, Somalia and Afghanistan, were estimated at Dh59.9 million. The report said that the humanitarian projects also included orphans sponsorship and other care projects that cost Dh37millon. It said that these programmes are continuously broadening due to the active and efficient mechanism for propagating the cause of orphans among charity organisations and philanthropists. "The number of orphans so far sponsored by the RC was 23.170 inside the country and in 15 other countries," said the report.

At the local level, the orphan programme has been widely acclaimed and the umbrella of beneficiaries is increasing annually. This is clearly shown in the fact that the value of the programmes implemented last year concerning sheltering of orphans was Dh86.6 million, including Dh38.5 million generated from the programmes implemented by the headquarters in Abu Dhabi and Dh48.1 million from the programmes carried out in Al Ain, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Western Region, said the report.

It said over the past three years, the UAE RC has spent Dh306 million to provide health, educational, social and rehabilitation programmes in Palestine. In Iraq, the UAE RC has been carrying out an ambitious humanitarian programme, which aims at improving living conditions of the Iraqi people. The programme, which has been focussing on provision of basic needs in areas of health, education, in addition to supporting people with special needs and orphans, has till now cost about Dh100 million, said the report.
