Dominican lauds UAE's swift response to Haiti calamity

The Government of Dominican has appreciated tireless efforts being made by the UAE to deliver urgent humanitarian and relief assistance to quake-victims in Haiti.

Dominican Health Minister Dr. Humberto Salazar said the UAE was among the first countries in responding to humanitarian appeals issued by the Dominican to rally international support for assisting disaster-hit population.

He told a joint press conference with the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) that the UAE humanitarian initiatives had boosted the international operations to mitigate repercussions of the humanitarian disaster on the Haitians who are facing difficult humanitarian situation by all standards.

According to him, the UAE has been - through its relief agencies - maintaining strong position and movement in the Haitian humanitarian front and moving at all directions to secure better living conditions to the affected population.

He added that the UAE RCA had also enhanced Dominican's efforts towards the quake victims especially its medical assistance to five hospitals handling thousands of patients.

Unveiling UAE aid plan to Haiti, Head of the RCA delegation said the Emirates World Humanitarian Mobile Hospital would be launched within tomorrow in the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince.

'All arrangements have been completed for commission the hospital at the down of the capital so to enable patients and injured persons reach easily,'he said.

He affirmed that the health sector would be given more attention as part of its effort to improve the deteriorating health situation.

'The medical team of the hospital, which comprises specialists, surgeons, paramedics, X-rays and lab. technician from the UAE, US, France, Argentina and Egypt, has already arrived Port-au-Prince for the launch of the hospital tomorrow,' he said.

On its way from Dominican to Haiti, the RCA delegation toured a number of camps housing thousands of survivors of the quake.

The Dominican health minister said the Khalifa Charitable Foundation was the first aid provider to deliver assistance to hospitals in the Dominican Republic to enable them treat those injured in the Haiti's earthquake.

In another move, the Foundation has completed arrangements for implementing the second phase of the Haiti relief programme which was ordered by UAE President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to deliver urgent humanitarian assistance in coordination with the Government of Dominican.

A source at the Foundation added that 500 tons of urgent relief materials would be purchased directly from the local market in the Dominican. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
