Dubai Air show is one of landmark events that mirror not only the civilized image of the UAE but also the astounding achievements that have been made by the country over the years, said General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Minister of Defence.

In a statement to WAM Sheikh Mohammed said the show has carved a conspicuous place in the global air shows calendar, adding that the significance of Dubai Air Show is underscored by the fact that around 700 companies from 43 countries are participating at the 9th edition of the show which opened in Dubai yesterday. The significant growth of the show, said Sheikh Mohammed, is also seen in the expansion in sideline activities such as specialized scientific conferences which are attended by top aviation experts and scientists.

Asked about his assessment of the deals made in the previous editions, Sheikh Mohammed said: "It is difficult to accurately assess the deal because some of the deals are initiated during the show while others are announced during the show so as to benefit from the international attention. I think the role of the show here is to create a conducive climate for parties to get to know one another and then negotiate and finalise deals. In other words, we bring manufactures and buyers together.”

In response to a question on Offset programmes, Sheikh Mohammed said this programme was serving the best national interest of the country in technology transfer and maximization of direct foreign investments.

On the participation of the UAE Armed Forces in international humanitarian missions, Sheikh Mohammed said: "The UAE is a nation of peace and its policies are widely seen as a model worth emulating in regional and international relations. We do not work against any country nor do we have enmity with anyone. We have built our army on purely defence purposes. It is an army for the defence of our people, our country and our territorial integrity. Therefore, whenever this army is assigned a humanitarian mission, it stands ready to obey the orders of the political leadership. Help is extended to the needy irrespective of race, creed or geographical location.”

Sheikh Mohammed pointed out that the UAE Armed Forces contributed in the recent past in humanitarian missions worldwide in many hotspots. On Arab military cooperation, Sheikh Mohammed opined that collective Arab military cooperation had failed in the past and therefore the best kind of cooperation that Arabs could offer to their peoples is economic cooperation.
