Dubai Outsource Zone is value for money
posted on 23/11/2006

Dubai Outsource Zone (DOZ) is not expensive compared to similar facilities in India and the Philippines, a top official claimed.

"We are growing higher on the value chain by attracting knowledge and talented people. We are not expensive, if you go to India, the Philippines and US, they are expensive," Esmail Al Naqi, director of Dubai Outsource Zone, told Gulf News.

"We have tripled in size of buildings, and nine-fold by land, from last year, we started with 3 million square feet and now we have 33 million square feet, company-wise we have doubled. A lot of people have misunderstood that we have started the zone in a bid to attract companies from India, but it is not true. We are not at all planning to compete with India.

"We are trying to cater to local markets. Because India today cannot service Arabic, Italian, Spanish, and French speaking people. It is where the value of Dubai comes. Dubai Outsource Zone is a pure zone servicing to the people.

"If you look at Indian companies, they are looking to broaden their reach by setting up in Dubai."

He says Dubai cannot compete with India and does not want to either.

"India today recruits from Dubai, believe it or not. They pay 40-50 per cent more than what Dubai pays. India is no longer a cheap place.

"If you go India, the outsource business is not only in Bangalore. It is in Chennai also. It is like a switch on and off button. If it is today in Chennai tomorrow it is in Pune," he added.

The vision of DOZ, part of the Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone, is to become an efficient and leading provider of services to foster the growth of Dubai's knowledge-based economy and the mission is to provide a comprehensive infrastructure and environment for outsource companies to set up global or regional hubs servicing the worldwide market.

"We are extremely surprised with the response at the Dubai Outsource Zone. It is way beyond at what we have expected," Al Naqi said.

"Initilaly we had a plan to start with 1,000 people by 2007, but now we will be having 4,000 people operating from the zone by 2007.

"We are completely sold out in 2007 and 2008. Our main strategy we will be to deliver what we have promised.

In Dubai Outsource Zone, we have managed to control the cost of living, for example, the price for commercial space in the zone is one-third that of Dubai on Shaikh Zayed Road.

"The price is fixed for five years. After that the maximum increase is 30 per cent. Now you control the cost of living."

DOZ has 72 companies registered and fully operational in 2007.
