Dubai Police yesterday sent a rescue team to Iran to help in relief operations in the earthquake-devastated city of Bam. According to Iranian estimates, the death and injured toll of the Friday's killer earthquake in south-eastern Iran could be as high as 70,000. The 35 member-team will coordinate its relief operations with the Mohammed bin Rashid Foundation for Humanitarian and Charitable Works under the Red Crescent Society.

Speaking to the team before they flew to Iran, Dubai Police Chief Major General Dhahi Khalfan said Dubai engagement 'is a message of solidarity and sympathy with our brethren in Iran. 'Dubai Police participation enforces their leading role in humanitarian services,' he added. According to him, Dubai Police will fly six task force, four for search and rescue, along with technicians and dog-handlers. A number of multi-purpose vehicles were also airlifted.
