The emirate plans to put up a homage to the South Korean city of Busan, Dubai's twin city, in Zabeel Park. Dubai signed a twin city agreement with Busan last year. Other cities that are twins to Dubai include Istanbul in Turkey, Geneva in Switzerland, Gold Coast in Australia and Osaka in Japan. Each city has a monument in the park.

The monument, named Fantastic Busan Wave in Dubai, has been designed by Korean designer Jeon Ki Su, who also designed torches for sporting events like the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the 2002 Busan Asian Games and the 2006 Doha Asian Games.

According to a press release, Mohammad Hassan Al Ali, head of projects design section of the general projects department at Dubai Municipality, the design was selected by Busan Municipality in a competition among the country's top designers. "The monument bears the shape of a split globe, with the surface forming a wave pattern with the merging water representing the deep friendship between the two cities," he said. He added the 'Fantastic Busan Wave in Dubai' monument will be eight metres high and built of stainless steel. The base will be of granite and will have eight lighting poles for night visitors. Dubai Municipality plans to release the tender for its construction soon. (Gulf News)
