Dubai Municipality has offered the first amount of the money it pledged to the five-phase renovation project of the old Syrian Citadel of Aleppo. A high-level delegation from the Dubai Municipality led by Rashad Mohammed bu Khash, Head of Heritage Buildings Section, has recently visited the northern Syrian city to inspect progress of work. They met Aleppo Governor Osama Oudi to hand him the money. 'The civic body has pledged to finance two phases of the project at a total cost of Dh 900,000 as part of Dubai Municipality's long-term plan to restore rich cultural, heritage and architectural landmarks of the Arab-Muslim World.

'The project is being carried out in cooperation with Aleppo City Council, the Arab Economic and Social Development Fund and The German Agency for Technical Association, bu Khash said. Bu Khash, who is also Assistant Director of General Projects Department at the municipality, said that 60 per cent of the first phase had been undertaken. He explained the project would cover renovation of the gate around the citadel, maintenance of the frontage of the citadel and the gardens around it. 'Old trees will be fenced, and traditional stone and wooden benches will be put in the squares,' he added. He said that Aleppo was registered in 1986 as one of the most important historical sites in the world's heritage record. ' The project is being executed at a time of growing interest in world tourism industry. Tourism is being developed as one of the most source of income for national economy,' he said.
