In response to the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for helping people affected by the snowstorm in Iraq and the Levant, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and President of the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) has instructed humanitarian agency to double its efforts and continue procuring winter aid from Jordanian markets to help Syrian refugees survive the current harsh winter conditions, a senior ERC official said.

Chairman of the Board of the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), Hamdan Musallam Al Mazrouie, said that the ERC teams is deploying volunteers to deliver blankets, warm clothes, heaters and medicines to refugees at makeshift camps as soon as possible.

He noted that within the next two days, an aid convoy of eight trucks will arrive in the Jordanian capital and another six-truck convoy will leave the UAE for Jordan.

Last Tuesday, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed ordered the launch of the humanitarian Show Compassion campaign, dubbed ‘Tarahamu' in Arabic, and an emergency airlift of lifesaving aid to a million Syrian refugees and other people to help them survive the fierce snowstorm which descended on the Levant.

Blankets, winter clothes, medicine, food and heaters are being flown to refugee camps in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, and to Gaza and other parts of the Palestinian territories. The first flight was due to take off in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, the ERC teams distributed winter aid to 1000 refugee families in Karak City, south of Amman.

In addition to distributing emergency aid, the UAE-funded Mrajeeb al-Fohood Refugee Camp in Jordan's northern city of Zarqa, is providing special accommodation and medical services for severely injured refugees.

The four children of Yassin al-Haj Ali, who were seriously injured when a tank shell hit their house in Deraa City, southern Syria, three years ago, are among the UAE special guests receiving treatment at the camp in Jordan, said Mohammed Al Ameri, Medical Supply Officer at the camp.

Eissa, five years, had his legs and right hand amputated after the shelling, and his brother Dahham had both feet muscles severely lacerated. Their brother Mohammed is recovering from an abdominal injury and Ayed had his thigh lacerated by shrapnel.

Based on a detailed report on the four brothers' medical condition, the ERC will provide three prosthetic limbs and physiotherapy for Eissa and muscle transplant for Dahham, added Al Ameri. – Emirates News Agency, WAM –
