ERBIL: The Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) has opened a number of developmental projects in Iraq's Kurdistan region as part of its initiatives to alleviate the suffering of the Iraqi and Syrian displaced persons.

The projects included 29 artesian wells, two schools and a sewing workshop.

Dr. Mohammed Ateq Al Falah, ERC Secretary-General, accompanied by Rashid Mohammed Al Mnsouri, the UAE Consul-General in Kurdistan, and representatives of the Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF), opened the projects, which would lead to a paradigm shift in the lives of the displaced people in vital sectors.

Al Falah said the artesian wells would serve more than 100,000 displaced persons in addition to the local population.

He added that two schools, one for boys and another for girls, were opened in Bahraka area. Each school has 12 classrooms with a capacity to seat 750 pupils. The ERC has also opened a sewing workshop which employs 37 women.

While there, the ERC delegation inspected the construction work of the maternity and children hospital and a school for girls in Bahraka. The two projects were 70 per cent complete.

The team also launched a food programme which will deliver food baskets to 50,000 displaced persons living in camps in Erbil. Aziz Reda Aziz, the head of the Barzani Charity Foundation, in whose attendance the programme was launched, appreciated the UAE's support to the displaced persons in this difficult time.

He said the ERC's relief and developmental projects had improved the living conditions of the displaced persons.

He praised the ERC as a key partner of his organisation in taking care of the large number of displaced persons. – Emirates News Agency, WAM - http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395285509261.html
