EWHG to conduct heart surgeries in Yemen

Sana'a - An international medical team sponsored by the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) starts conducting heart operations on Sunday The Emirates World Heart Group (EWHG) will conduct four to six heart operations daily in cooperation with the Italian San Donato heart institute and Yemeni health ministry. The medical team, led by Dr. Abdul Rahman Al Olaqi, a Cardiologist at Mafraq Hospital in Abu Dhabi, toured today Al Thuwra hospital to inspect facilities and technical preparations.



About 20 cardiac catheterisation surgeries will be conducted in the first day of the mission. Meanwhile the RCS team, headed by Relief Section Dr. Saleh Al Taie, met its Yemeni counterpart to discuss aspects of joint cooperation in relief and humanitarian projects. Al Taie said the RCS was willing to expand cooperation with its Yemeni counterpart in various humanitarian fields.



The RCS and the Milan-based group has signed a memorandum of understanding with the aim of reaching out to the needy people who cannot afford high expensive of treatment of heart diseases. Plans for 2004 is to conduct surgeries in seven countries (Yemen, Iraq, Sudan, Cameroon, Egypt, Palestine Peru). The RCS called the initiative as a fresh hope to heart disease patients who have no financial resources for treatment. The EHWG is considered the first of its kind worldwide and was founded in 2001 to help poor patients.



So far the EHWG has visited Syria, Egypt, Morocco and Bahrain where the team carried out over 100 complex surgeries. The Group also focuses on providing free high quality medical services to patients in developing countries. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
