The External Information Department of the UAE National Media Council (NMC) has produced 8 documentaries showcasing the county's pilot projects and rich experience on conservation, management and development of water supplies at a major global gathering to be held in Spain later this year.

The 8 documentaries which were made by famous freelance wildlife filmmaker and documentary cameraman Doug Allan over 8 months using the latest underwater and topside shooting technologies will be played on a giant screens in the UAE Pavillion at Expo Zaragoza 2008 which will be running from 14th June to 14th September 2008 under the theme 'Water and Sustainable Development'.

"The documentaries are true demonstration of the UAE leadership efforts to provide fresh sources of water to continue the process of development initiated by the UAE founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as well as to further build on the forefathers' success in facing survival challenges," said Minister of Labour and NMC Chairman Saqr Ghobash.

"The 8 creative works aim to further promote the UAE's tourism, media and culture and come as part of a creatively formulated long-term campaign targeting the huge number of audience expected at the global event", noted Ghobash.

Centred around a water and survival theme, the productions provide chronological presentation of the UAE's success in inventing methods over thousands of years to secure and preserve water in traditional specially-designed water channels (locally known aflaj), dams, tanks and other types of storage.

The team is led by Peter Vine, Author of "Arab Gold: Heritage of the UAE" and media personality who said an additional more documentary tells the success story of the UAE stretching from the early days of the Federation which was established in 1975.

The documentaries, Vine added, will be distributed on DVDs and will be available in other electronic formats for broadcast via Spanish and other international TV channels, internet websites and media outlets. The UAE participates in the global water event along with 96 other countries and will use the opportunity to further strengthen its credibility as a leader in the field of water and sustainable development.

Expo Zaragoza 2008 will reveal some of the innovative solutions to the age old problem of supplying sufficient water to meet increasing demands of a burgeoning population and massive urban, economic and industrial expansions. Around 8 million people are expected by organizers at the venue of the event. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
