Electronic passport system to be implemented

The Ministry of Interior is to implement the "electronic passport" system in its efforts to benefit from technology, according to a statement issued by the ministry's Information Systems Department. "The move is in line with the directives of Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior.

"Sheikh Saif's directives come in line with the UAE's keenness to keep pace with the fast changing information technology trends," the statement said. The e-passport features a built-in electronic chip that contains the personal data of the passport holder along with his/her photograph. It is characterised with high security specifications that also include the fingerprint and iris scan.

The new passport will be machine-readable in other countries that implement similar means.

The statement says that the implementation is also underway to introduce the e-gate system at all the country's ports. The system is based on the use of an electronic card which contains all personal data of the passenger, and which can be read electronically upon passing the gate without the need for any other procedures at immigration.

The ministry had earlier announced similar projects in line with the application of the e-government principles, including the ID Card project, VIP Services Section for Naturalisation and Residency transactions in Abu Dhabi. (The Gulf News)
