Damascus, the capital of Syria, has been the last destination in which the plane of Emirates World Heart Group of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA), landed. This time the Group targeted patients of Palestinian camps in Syria.

The Basel heart centre has been turned into beehive as a team of 25 members has conducted 34 critical heart operations for children and tens of catheterization operations since the Group's humanitarian mission started in March 24.

Family members of three-year old heart patient Salam burst into tears of joy for the recovery of their child. The heart team has painted a smile to the family of this child which suffered heart problems since her birth.

Lying near Salam in the hospital is the 18-month old Sham who also underwent a successful heart surgery. Her family could not have even believed that their child had recovered. UAE cardiologist Adel Al Sahmeri, head of the team, said Sham's case was one of the most critical cases as she suffered from disfigurement of heart.

During the visit to Syria, the Group conducted training workshops for Syrian heart doctors.

The Group conducted heart surgeries and offered curative services in a number of Arab and African countries including Egypt, Morocco, Sudan, Jordan and Kenya. The Group started with five cardiologists from the UAE and now boasts of over 200 heart specialists and surgeons hailing from France, Canada, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and South Africa.

The Group has acclaimed international reputation, prompting some countries to invite it to offer its service to its people.

Dr. Saleh Al Taie, head of visiting RCS delegation to Syria, indicated that the RCS was among the first international relief organisation that visited Palestinian refugees camps in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon to assess their basic requirements. 'We are planning to carry out a series of development projects in the fields of health, education and housing,' he added. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
