Emirates Red Crescent spent over Dh 349m in humanitarian and development assistance in first four months of 2015

The Emirates Red Crescent, ERC, announced that in the first four months of the year it had carried out humanitarian, charitable, relief and development programmes to the tune of Dh 349.23 million, with overseas operations taking the lion's share of Dh 300.75 million.

Fahad Abdul Rahman bin Sultan, Deputy ERC Secretary-General, told a media briefing yesterday that more than 8,000 families with 40,000 members inside the country had benefited from these programmes. Up to the end of April 2015, More than 94,000 orphans were sponsored by the ERC both within the UAE and beyond.

The ERC, he affirmed, had been very active and its humanitarian assistance to those affected by the current events had seen significant increase, especially to those in the Arab region, thanks to unwavering support, sound directives and close follow up by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region, and ERC Chairman.

The ERC, he added, had escalated its humanitarian operations in these affected areas, making a qualitative leap in the services it provides to refugees, and Internally Displaced Persons (ISPs) affected by the current crises in Syria and Iraq.

He noted that the ERC had concentrated on implementing development projects that enhance resilience of local populations in most vulnerable regions and flash points to endure and overcome imminent risks as well as financial, social and economic problems.

Locally, the ERC official said that Dh 11.9 million in humanitarian assistance was offered to 4,327 families in the period from January to April of the current year and Dh 9 million was given to help 922 patients.

Regarding education assistance, he said the ERC had offered Dh 9.7 million to 2,477 needy students while the value of local development projects stood at Dh 11.9 million. The ERC has spent Dh 3.6 million on a programme to support 199 prison inmates.

Internationally, the Deputy ERC Secretary-General said the ERC had undertaken a number of emergency relief programmes in support of people affected by crises and catastrophes, and had answered humanitarian appeals received from the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and other national and international organisations.

From January to April, he said, the ERC provided relief assistance worth Dh 169.5 million to affected people in Syria, Palestine, Jordan, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, Malaysia and Serbia. Construction and development projects in health, educational, housing and water sectors carried out by the ERC outside the country reached Dh 114.76 million. These projects are meant to support livelihoods and improve economic conditions of low-income families in Palestine, Egypt, Iraq, Somalia, Mexico, India, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Philippines, Benin, Bangladesh and Thailand.

He added that projects worth Dh 2.2 million were implemented under the UAE Water Aid Initiative (Suqia) in Tanzania, Mauritania, Philippines and Uganda.

The ERC, he said, had allocated Dh 6.4 million to provide medical assistance, school stationary and social services to persons with special needs.

'In the first four months of the year, the ERC spent Dh 7.8 million to sponsor 17,381 orphans, bringing to 94,157 the total number sponsored by the ERC in 26 countries across the world.
