Energy is at the heart of the special relationship between the UAE and the US which has been nurtured and has grown to the point where the two countries share close cooperation and strong bonds on matters of strategic security, economic development and energy, opined today a major English language daily paper.

"To continue its rapid and impressive economic growth in the coming years, the UAE has committed itself to making nuclear energy the backbone for growth - providing a reliable and scalable source of power," said the "Gulf News” in an editorial comment on the meeting late on Thursday in the Oval Office between General sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and US President Barack Obama The meeting, it added, highlights the unique relationship that exists between the two nations.

"The development of this nuclear programme is vital. Equally important is ensuring that the nuclear technology is used purely for peaceful and non-proliferation purposes. As a nation built on the values of mutual respect and peace, the leadership of the UAE is wholly and fully committed to nuclear development solely for economic progress. When sheikh Mohammad met with the US leader, this point was addressed." "More importantly, sheikh Mohammad applauded Obama's strong and unwavering support for the US-UAE Bilateral Agreement for Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation. Better known as the 123 Agreement, this document was submitted in May to the US Congress for approval and is a model blueprint for the peaceful development of nuclear energy.

Its endorsement, likely to take effect on October 17, should open the door for even greater levels of cooperation between the two nations, allowing for the peaceful exchange of nuclear technologies.

While other regional matters were discussed at Thursday meeting in the White House, approval of the 123 Agreement was at the top of the agenda for the UAE. It has the approval of Obama's Cabinet members but must still clear Congress. Its approval will strengthen ties to an even higher level," the paper added. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
