Environment 2001 - Solar Energy

The use of solar energy as an energy source for water desalination in the country's remote areas can result in financial and environmental benefits, a UAE energy official said. 'The environmental benefits result from a substantial reduction in the amount of harmful gases released to the environment by virtue of the reduction or elimination of fossil fuel used by the plant,' said Ali Al Nashar of the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) in a paper presented to the environment 2001 conference. ' The high-energy consumption of distillation plants does not only place a financial burden on plant owners but, also impose a strong burden on the environment since energy is normally produced by the burning of fossil fuel,' he said. Al Nashar noted that the UAE has abundant and favourable solar radiation intensity in most of its areas. ' It is clear that a clean and free energy resource is available in the UAE for use not only for desalination but also for power generation, air-condition etc,' he added.
