A UN expert has called for taking environmental and health considerations into account in transport- related policies. Presenting a paper to the environment conference today under the title 'The European Approach to Transportation, Environment and Health: Transport, Health and Environment in Pan-European Programme (PEP), Francesca Racioppi, Technical Officer, Transport and Health WHO Regional Office for Europe, said that inter-sectoral collaboration was needed to promote implementing the transport, health and environment Pan European Programme as an international policy framework.

'Within the framework of the PEP, collaboration is promoted through concrete actions and projects, such as an information-sharing and dissemination tool, the PEP Clearing House on Transport, as well as through environment and health research and projects facilitating the inclusion of environmental and health considerations into transport-related policy decisions, she added.

Dr. Carlos Dora of the Health Impact Assessment Protection of the Human Environmental Department World Health Organization gave an overview of the health impacts from transportation, including impacts from air pollution, injuries, noise and physical activity.

The WHO specialist identified the main sources of evidence, and how they had been linked to transportation activities. It will mention the current experience in modelling those health impacts. He highlighted the use of economic valuation of health impacts and their use in cost benefit analyses, of impact assessment tools, indicators, and of information and communication strategies. A paper on Urban Sustainable Transport in Pakistan: Threats and Opportunities was also reviewed. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
