Arab and international environment and energy experts and around 300 companies from 28 countries will gather here tomorrow for the Environment and Energy Conference and Exhibition (Environment 2003), a senior General Exhibition Corporation said. Saeed bin Jaber Al Suwaidi, Chairman of the General Exhibition Corporation, said the event, which is being organised by the Environment Research and Wildlife Development Agency, would shed light on the UAE's environmental efforts at local, regional and international levels.

"President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan pays due attention to the environment and has, from his early days in office, set up concerned bodies and issued laws to protect and conserve the local environment," said Al Suwaidi, who is also chairman of Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He said the four-day forum will examine a range of topics, including implications of energy related policies in the environment, global socio-economic implications of energy policies, current and future environment-friendly technologies, poverty alleviation and consumption patterns.

"The forum for Arab ministers of energy and environment will back Arab rights to develop their natural resources in sustainable way and ensure easy flow of oil and gas supplies to world markets," he said. The ministers, Al Suwaidi added, would also explore best ways to benefit from the Abu Dhabi global initiative on environmental date collection and other initiatives. The General Exhibition Corporation official said: "It is necessary to draw an integrated environmental energy strategy for the Gulf region which is facing big environmental challenges and threats." "We believe the UAE's completion of its environmental strategy and action plan will pave the way for the aspired Arab integrated strategy," he added. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
