The Abu Dhabi Civil Aviation Authority, the United Nations Environmental Programme, UNEP, the Federal Environmental Agency, FEA, and the Austrian pavilion were awarded first prizes in the category of Best Public Pavilions at the Environment 2001 Exhibition and Conference. Sultan Obaid Bakhit Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the General Exhibition Corporation, said the exhibition and conference were successful, thanks to the support and confidence of the participants. Speaking at the award-giving ceremony yesterday, Al Suwaidi expressed the hope that participation in the 2003 event would be both qualitative and quantitative.

In the government agencies category, winners were Abu Dhabi Municipality and Town Planning Department, Fujairah and Sharjah municipalities, the President's Private Department, Dubai Seaports Authority and Sharjah Environment and Protected Areas Authority. Awards for general pavilions went to Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency, Abu Dhabi National Oil Co and Abu Dhabi Electricity and Water Authority. French, German and British exhibitors won prizes as best private pavilions. Best Exhibitors Awards went to British Petroleum, Shell and TotalFina. Earlier, Al Suwaidi said some 20,000 people visited the Exhibition and conference which was held from February 4 to 8. Al Suwaid said that 23 Arab and foreign ministers for environment visited the four-day event. "We assess the exhibition by the quality of modern technology on display, not by number of visitors," he said. (The Gulf News)
