Chicago - The United States comes at the forefront of major markets for Etihad Airways, and the flights launched to Chicago will be an important driver for future growth of Etihad, said the company's CEO James Hogan.
Addressing a reception hosted by Etihad Airways in Chicago to announce the official launch of Abu Dhabi-Chicago flight, Hogan said that the new route will contribute to a qualitative shift in the relationship between Abu Dhabi and Chicago because of the close similarity between them in economic, cultural and tourism aspects.
Abu Dhabi International Airport and Chicago O'Hare International Airport signed today a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to become ‘sister airports', in a unique twinning arrangement which will see the sharing of technical, commercial and environmental best practices.
Hogan expressed his happiness over the twinning agreement and said it would contribute to the future growth in various aspects.
He emphasised the strong relationship between Abu Dhabi and Chicago and said that the new service launched by Etihad Airways will bring many economic benefits to the third-largest city in the United States.
Hogan explained the importance of the first air route linking the city of Chicago and the Gulf States as well as the importance of Abu Dhabi's strategic location in the heart of the Arab world.
He added that the airline "does not plan to use this service only with the aim of transporting passengers from Chicago and Midwest U.S. to Abu Dhabi and the Middle East, but also for lifting thousands of travellers from the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent and Asia to Chicago through the main operating base for the company in Abu Dhabi International Airport, which will find new job opportunities".
Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, had launched flights from its Abu Dhabi home-base to the American city of Chicago earlier last month as the Flight EY151 took-off on Wednesday 2 September, landing 14 hours later at Chicago O'Hare International Airport.
Head of Corporate Communications and Media of Etihad Airways Harib Mubarak Al Muhairi said in a statement to Emirates News Agency (WAM) that Etihad has recently signed a codeshare partnership with American Airlines which would expand the networks of Etihad Airways and American Airlines by facilitating the linkage between Abu Dhabi and major cities in the United States such as Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Houston. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
