The new makers of the Eurofighter combat aircraft have made a debut at IDEX 2001 with high hopes that the fighter could find its way into the lucrative middle east market. The European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), a result of a merger between three major weapons makers, is exhibiting samples of its Eurofighter and other aircrafts at IDEX and officials said they had already discussed deals. "We have very serious business oriented meetings with customers who are able to buy," said Gregor Kursell, EADS International Media Relations Officer.

The discussions were with high ranking delegates from the UAE and other Gulf States as well as other countries. We agreed to hold further negotiations. He said that EADS had reached a memorandum of understanding with the UAE Air Forces in 1999 to jointly pursue the Mako programme. ' We will start producing that aircraft and it will be ready for a test flight in 2005. The test could be carried out in the UAE which will likely buy some of these aircrafts,' he said. Wolfram Wolff, Manager of Press Information, said EADS still hopes it would market the Eurofighter in the middle east although it lost along with other rivals to the F-16 in a multi-billion dollar package signed between the UAE and the US. ' We are hopeful that we will sell this aircraft somewhere in the region. It is an advanced aircraft that satisfies the future needs of the countries of the region,' he said.
