A major press campaign in Europe, organised under the umbrella of the National Media Council and focusing on the conference of Arab women in Abu Dhabi, had a vast and overwhelming response in the European media.

A large number of prestigious publications throughout Europe were invited to attend the conference. All of the media reacted positively, underlining their interest for what they estimate to be an original and most deserving initiative of Sheikha Fatima.

Most unfortunately, the recently held American elections did not allow some journalists to assist personally at the Abu Dhabi conference. However, most reporters, such as Mrs. Zecchinelli from the prestigious Italian paper Corriere della Sera, are looking forward to visit Abu Dhabi in 2009 in order to study the position of women in the Arab world and to communicate on the topic.

Seven major European media dealt extensively with the discussions and the outcome of the conference. Politiken, the leader among the Scandinavian newspapers, hailed the initiative and underlined the humble and yet most courageous personality of Sheikha Fatima. Before leaving for Abu Dhabi, its representative and major reporter Helle Hellmann called the initiative of Sheikha Fatima a necessary and successful approach to the emancipation of Arab women. "It is a good thing to have such women at the forefront of the Arab world. They create opportunities and they have a model role. I am delighted to be able to assist this meeting." Her article will be published on Sunday and will deal extensively with the work and the initiatives of Sheikha Fatima.

Michel Beuret, Head of the Foreign Department at the Swiss newspaper "L'Hebdo de Gen ve" published two pages at the outcome of the conference, underlining the favourable impression made by Sheikha Fatima and his admiration for her efforts to promote the role of the Arab women on both the Arab and international scene.

Agnes Rotivel from the French daily La Croix hailed the initiative of Sheikha Fatima, stressing the unique character of the conference which allowed to bring together all of the First Ladies of the Arab world. "This seems to be unbelievable, yet Sheikha Fatima by herself managed to federate all these personalities to discuss the role of Arab women. You would thing you were dreaming, but this is a most positive signal send to the Arab capitals and the world. The strong voice of this unique and charismatic woman is now heard throughout the world." Agnes Rotivel wrote a most flattering article on the efforts of Sheikha Fatima and she delivered three major and highly successful chronicles on the website of the newspaper.

The major Russian daily Rossiskaia Gazetta published three articles on the conference and the position of women in the Arab world. Maksim Makaritchev, special envoy in Abu Dhabi, spoke of a surprising, original and most courageous initiative, hailing the personality and international renown of Sheikha Fatima.

Silke Lode, special envoy of the prestigious German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung, published an article on the conclusions of the conference, detailing the efforts of Sheikha Fatima.

Lumena Raposo, special envoy of the Diaro de Noticias, and Maria Sanchez, reporter at El Pais, both pointed at the exceptional and unique character of Sheikha Fatima : "A most intelligent and dynamic woman with a firm will and clear objectives." Both journalists followed the proceedings of the conference in detail and are preparing a comprehensive report to be published soon. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
