Saint Petersburg: F1 Team Abu Dhabi's Thani Al Qamzi regained a 10-point lead in the 2009 UIM F1 World Championship by finishing third overall in the second Grand Prix of Russia on the Neva River in the historic city of Saint Petersburg on Sunday evening.
Teammate Ahmad Al Hameli finished fifth overall to cap a successful race meeting for the Emirati team, in a race that was won by Sweden's Jonas Andersson and saw Italian Guido Cappellini retire on the 19th lap and World Champion, Jay Price, withdraw before the start with engine-related problems.
The result means that Al Qamzi heads to the next four races in China in October with a 10-point lead over Price and Al Hameli holds fourth place in the UIM F1 Drivers Championship, 18 points behind Al Qamzi and a mere five points behind race winner Andersson in third place. The duo extend their lead in the UIM F1 Teams Championship for F1 Team Abu Dhabi after an action-packed race that featured three restarts.
Al Hameli and Al Qamzi held third and sixth positions through the early minutes of the time trials to determine pole position for Sunday's race. Price continued where he left off on Saturday to stake his claim on pole position from Fabio Comparato, although Cappellini nudged Al Hameli down to fourth with a lap of 49.93s.
A flying lap of 49.42s pushed Al Hameli into provisional pole position, ahead of Price, Comparato, Andersson and Cappellini.
