An official round of talks was held in Abu Dhabi yesterday between the Federal National Council (FNC) and the Group of Latin America and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC), the largest geopolitical group of the International Parliamentary Union (IPU).

The session was co-chaired by FNC Speaker Dr. Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi and GRULAC President Diputado Roberto Leon.

The two sides discussed means to deepen friendship and cooperation in a way that will contribute in strengthening UAE's ties with the Latin American and Caribbean countries, based on shared values and common interests.

The talks focussed on enhancing cooperation and cooperation in political, parliamentary, economic and social fields, as well as issues of energy and sustainability. The FNC and GRULAC also exchanged views on the topics in the agenda of IPU's upcoming meetings and ways to develop common political and economic interests between the UAE and the 22-member countries' group.

The GRULAC President applauded the UAE's approach towards national, regional and international affairs, which is based on dialogue, positive interaction, peaceful settlement of disputes and provision of an ideal environment for international relations, on the basis of good neighbourliness, moderation, tolerance and non-violence.

He added that Latin America is the first region of the world to be declared free of weapons of mass destruction.

Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi welcomed and praised an initiative by the Chilean representative in GRULAC to table a proposal in his country's parliament for avoidance of dual taxation with the UAE.

She added that GRULAC delegation's visit to the UAE coincides with the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, an excellent opportunity to highlight the two sides' identical views on the use of clean and renewable energy and preservation of natural resources, environment and water.

Dr. Amal Al Qubaisi said the UAE believes that the only way to resolve border disputes is either through a direct dialogue or by referring to relevant international organisations.

She called on the Islamic Republic of Iran to respond positively to the UAE's initiative of reaching a peaceful solution to its three occupied islands of Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa, through direct negotiations and on the basis of the UN Charter and the international law. – Emirates News Agency, WAM - http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395290406022.html
