Secretary General of the Cabinet H.E Najla Al-Awar yesterday introduced the Federal Government Spokesperson System at a meeting with editor-in-chiefs of local newspapers, directors of local radio and television stations and as directors of news departments at the said media outlets to The meeting explained the assignments of spokespersons of the federal government and ministries as providing information and responding to queries within the framework of the governmental strategy for media and press.

Al-Awar said the Government Communication Office, which is affiliated with the Secretariat General of the Cabinet, has developed the new system as per the best industry standards to meet the requirements of the federal government.

The system, she added, "is aimed to assign the governmental officials who shall be the only individuals who are authorized to release to the media statements on behalf of the federal government and who shall also be only sources of information according to their roles and responsibilities.

"Through a clear-cut, well-defined approach and procedures as well as through ensuring the authenticity and credibility of information, the Governmental Spokesperson System is also aimed at organizing the way federal government, ministries and bodies deal with the media in a systematic and transparent way, as well as at streamlining and facilitating the work of representatives of the media who seek information and data from governmental bodies, explained Al-Awar.

The System defines two categories of governmental spokespersons:

1- Their Highnesses and Excellence the Ministers who may speak about all the strategic matters of their respective ministries. The Cabinet may name some of the ministers to speak about specified issues.

2- The second category includes VIP's and senior officials at the ministries, who have to be nominated by the ministers and approved by the Cabinet to speak, on behalf of their federal organizations, to engage in day-to-day interaction with the media about operational matters as well as to answer inquiries by media representatives.

The role of spokespersons that are approved by the Cabinet also includes close observation of local and international press and media reports on the respective federal body.

"Spokespersons approved by the Cabinet are the only individuals that are officially authorized to communicate with the media and shall be the only sources of governmental statements. Information collected through others at the governmental bodies shall not be considered as valid and authorized information", Al-Awar stressed.

All communication teams have received training on delivering all kinds of support to official spokespersons, Al-Awar remarked adding that the media will be provided with the names and contacts details of official spokespersons. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
