Federal National Council approves preliminary amendments to federal bill on National Media Council

The Committee of Education, Youth, Media and Culture at the Federal National Council yesterday approved preliminary amendments to a federal bill on the powers of the National Media Council.

According to the 16-article bill, the National Media Council is the media regulatory authority responsible for developing media policies and regulations, coordinating between the emirates on media policy in line with the country's domestic and foreign policies and its efforts to strengthen the Federation, project national unity of the country as a political unity that secures well-being and stability for citizens.

The amendments to the bill were approved at the committee's sixth meeting in the first regular term of the FNC's 16th legislative chapter. Presented by the cabinet, the bill is aimed at keeping pace with developments in the media sector in the UAE.

An affiliate of the cabinet, the National Media Council was created by virtue of Federal Law No. 2 of 1972 as a corporate entity with an independent budget and legal competency.

Head of the FNC Committee of Education, Youth, Media and Culture, Naima Abdullah Al Sharhan said the committee's report on the bill will be discussed in the next meeting before it is presented to the council for discussion.

The officials of the National Media Council who attended the meeting are Mansour Al Mansouri, Acting Director-General; Ibrahim Al Abed, Advisor to the Chairman of Board of Directors; Salim Al Ameri, Deputy Director-General; and Saeed Al Darmaki, Executive Director for Media Affairs. – Emirates News Agency, WAM -
