Fees to avoid exit for new job visas studied

The General Directorate of Naturalisation and Residency Department is considering adopting a new procedure for expatriates who are issued new labour permits to stay in the country without taking an exit. According to a department source the proposal is being studied with other naturalisation and residency departments nationwide to come up with a final decision. It is being debated with the airline companies operating in the country, in view of the fact that they prefer those with expired permits to leave and come back.

Sources said the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department has already implemented this system by levying a fee of Dh500 from each expatriate for not taking the exit. If implemented countrywide, it will be much easier and cost effective for expatriates, said the source. Paying a fee is much easier than the hassle of buying an air ticket and leaving the country. But this will eventually affect the airline business.

The department has yet to set the value of the proposed fees, said the source, adding it always seeks to improve the quality of services offered to public and reduce the burden on individuals and companies alike. In its efforts to improve its services, the department has recently launched a home delivery service via Express Mail and DHL, to deliver transactions to applicants at home. (The Gulf News)
