Festive atmosphere gripped UAE on Accession Day

A festive atmosphere prevailed in the country last Wednesday to mark the 37th anniversary of the accession of President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi. Glittering fireworks lit up the sky, with Arabic music, concerts and traditional dances at the Corniche forming part of the celebrations. The programmes were prepared by various government and non-government organisations.

Crowds thronged the Corniche to witness the spectacular fireworks at the Breakwater last Wednesday night. National and expatriates alike roamed the area in colourful traditional attire. Vehicles decorated with UAE flags and portraits of Sheikh Zayed began gathering at Corniche from early evening to make up a carnival. Local TV and radio stations also broadcast several programmes and documentaries on Accession Day celebrations right through the day. The grand celebrations, including a series of activities and games representing UAE's heritage and history, were organised by the Emirates Heritage Club at the Heritage Village. (The Gulf News)
