German Ambassador, Dr. Alexander Muhlen, today expressed his happiness over the participation of his country in the International Defence Exhibition IDEX2001, to be held here from March18 to 22. In an exclusive interview with the Emirates News Agency, WAM, Dr. Muhlen said that Germany was committed to participating in this great event in an effort to enhance its relations with the UAE. He expressed the hope that his country's participation in IDEX and other international exhibitions being held in the UAE would contribute towards the strengthening of relations between the two countries.

On the volume of Germany's participation in the IDEX2001, the ambassador said that record 57 German companies are participating in the exhibition, two more than in the previous participations. He pointed out that the 57 companies will occupy the same area of 1,700 square metres of the German pavilion, adding that some bigger German firms have replaced smaller ones in this year's participation.

On the type of exhibits on show at the German pavilion, the ambassador said that they include land-based systems like armoured and unarmoured vehicles, naval technology and equipment, aviation systems and technology, electronics for surveillance and air defence and equipment components, adding that the IDEX is one of the few defence exhibitions in the world where a joint German stand is organised. "This reflects the importance attached to the Arab market by the German Defence industry," he said.

Evaluating his country's participation in the IDEX2001, the German ambassador described this year's participation as 'positive', adding that for a high level German delegation, headed by the German Deputy Minister of Defence, Walter Kolbow, and Deputy Chief of Staff of the German navy, Rear Admiral Jorg Auer, to lead Germany participation in IDEX2001, reflects the depth of relations between Germany and the UAE. He pointed out that three German war ships, including a supply ship, a minesweeper and a mine hunter, will participate in the IDEX2001. He reiterated that Germany's participation in the exhibition is aimed at strengthening co-operation agreements signed between the two countries in a number of fields, including the field of technology, defence and economy, adding that German presence in such an international exhibition, will contribute immensely in boosting such relations. He pointed out that there are a number of projects in the UAE being undertaken by German companies, so German presence in this show would strengthen those projects, he said.

On the future of relations between the UAE Germany, Dr. Muhlen said that relations between the two countries continue to grow from strength to strength. "The UAE is a friendly country. Relations between us continue to grow from strength to strength. So I see a bright future for relations between the two countries," he said. He pointed out that the German government was committed to improving those relations in all fields, adding that Gulf countries, especially the UAE, enjoy high level of stability. So there are a lot of avenues that we can tap to enhance relations between us," he said, citing avenues like medium and small-scale industries and the field of investment. "We hope to win UAE investors to invest in Germany," he said.

Asked whether he can see Germany breaking the monopoly of American and British equipment in the region, the ambassador said that his country is not in competition with any country, adding that the open market policy of the Gulf States, especially the UAE, opens the door wide for all. "There are a lot of space that Germany can fill," he said. Asked how he sees the organisation of IDEX, the ambassador said that organisation is of high level and of international standard, adding that his country will continue to participate in IDEX and all other international and specialised exhibitions being held in the UAE. He cited his country's active participation in the Tripartite Defence Exhibition, TRIDEX, during which Germany introduced to the UAE, a mobile hospital. He said that the UAE had now become an important business centre in the Gulf and Middle East. "So we need to strengthen our stand here through such participation," he added.
