Emirati filmmaker Hanan Al Muhairi wants to open the region's first horse riding centre for women in the UAE. Hanan, whose documentary film Our Right to Ride was screened as part of the Fourth University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) Multicultural Festival, said she has sought to highlight the Emirati woman's potential and capabilities to make positive change and alter the society's perceptions.
Hanan, who is the President of Arabyana, the UAE's pioneering all-women horse riding team, tells the story of Arabyana, focusing on religious, social and other issues surrounding the female horse riding sport and tracing the story of the team's six founding members and following their journey through challenges, conflicts and criticism.
The 60-minute film was first screened at the Abu Dhabi Marina Mall as part of the Middle Eastern International Film Festival and won wide acclaim.
Hanan, who holds a Bachelor's degree in applied sciences and applied media communications, is completing her Masters in strategic human resources management at the UOWD.
She said: "Setting up a women's horse riding centre is my main aim. My masters is part of the plan, as I feel it will give me the skills and tools needed to run such a centre." Besides Hanan's film, the festival featured a number of colourful and varied events reflecting the diverse spirit of the university that hosts students of 108 nationalities. – Emirates Business 24|7
