Nine persons sustained minor to moderate injuries and ten vehicles were either partly or completely damaged in a fire that erupted yesterday afternoon at an eight storey building on the Airport Road in the capital.
The timely intervention of Abu Dhabi Police forces, civil defence, mobile hospital and other relevant teams had averted any loss of lives in the fire accident.
Brigadier Fares Al Faresi, head of the disaster management team, said 14 fire engines (water tankers), 12 pumps, three escalators, seven ambulances and seven civil defence stations along with personnel from the criminal investigations department and crime scene investigators battled for three hours to extinguish the fire.
'Rescue teams evacuated all inhabitants to safe shelters while three persons were taken to the Sheikh Khalifa Hospital and another six received necessary medical care at the mobile hospital on the spot,' he added.
He indicated that Social Support Centres and Community Police had jointly coordinated efforts to give safe shelters to 26 families while the civil defence had distributed 3000 Ifar meals to the affected residents.
He added that personnel of the civil defence, emergency and public safety, quick intervention and ambulance along with the police's Air Wing had fought the fire to evacuate the building in a record time.
'The cause of the fire is not yet known and investigations are on to identify the circumstances behind the fire, the police officer said.
In Al Ain, the fire-fighters contained a fire that broke out at dawn at the Al Ain Old Central Market.
Lt. Colonel Zayed Al Hajeri, acting head of emergency in Al Ain, said no one was injured in the fire accident.
