Fire breaks out in Dubai warehouse

A major fire broke out on Sunday morning in a vacant warehouse in Dubai's Al Barsha area behind the Traffic Department, near Al Quoz Industrial Area 3.

The blaze later spread, engulfing tyre and garment units and a bakery. There were no casualties.

The Director of Dubai Civil Defence, Maj. Gen. Rashid Al Thani Al Matroushi, told The Gulf Today that the call on the blaze reached his department at 11:19am, but by 1:30pm, the fire was "still raging.”

He said the cause is yet to be identified. Social networking sites were abuzz with speculation that the warehouse had a bakery. But Al Matroushi said the warehouse, which was near the bakery, was "not operational.”

An eyewitness, Himanshu Vyas, who works at Emaar Gold & Diamond Park near the area where the incident took place, said the fire didn't start from the bakery as social media accounts had put it, but had spread to other outlets including the bakery.

"It doesn't look like the bakery was the source of the fire. The fire seems to have spread to a garment unit and engulfed tyre and furniture shops nearby as well as the bakery,” said Himanshu.

Social media was abuzz with rumours that the fire erupted near the Mall of the Emirates.

This prompted the mall's management to respond through Twitter denying the fire broke out near its establishment. "[The] Mall of the Emirates can confirm the fire is not happening at the mall.”

Dubai Police then allayed fears of mall shoppers by posting, "Major fire accident in a warehouse located behind traffic department in Al Barsha.”

Two-hour traffic gridlock

The fire caused a two-hour traffic snarl on Sheikh Zayed Road between Al Noor Islamic Bank Metro Station and Oasis Centre.

An eyewitness who resides in the Tecom area told this reporter that traffic was reduced to a crawl as motorists stared at the raging fire. "The smoke was so thick,” she said. – The Gulf Today
