A UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) delegation headed by Salim Ali Salim Al Ghafli toured the Iraqi port of Umm Qasr and nearby areas yesterday to discuss ways of distributing relief supplies and medicines, even as the first UAE relief ship arrived at the port to deliver aid to the Iraqi people. The delegation was in talks with other humanitarian organisations and international charities on cooperation regarding the aid distribution. The supply of relief materials is in line with the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and has been closely supervised by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority.

The relief ship took 36 hours to reach Umm Qasr from Port Rashid in Dubai. The relief assistance includes food, water, medicines and other items for the Iraqi children. This is the first relief consignment to Iraq and is part of the RCA's humanitarian efforts for the Iraqi people, said Al Ghafli. He said this will soon be followed by more relief aid soon to help improve the deteriorating conditions of the Iraqi brethren and to contribute to their urgent requirements. The relief ship that set sail on Wednesday, was prepared in less than 24 hours. The vessel is carrying 700 tonnes of foodstuffs. A spokesman for Britain's Royal Navy had said Thursday the UAE consignment would be the first to arrive at the port. (The Gulf News)
